Today was another day spent working SOAR. The weather was nice for us once again, so we sold everything outside. It was a slow day as not many incoming students were on campus today. We sold only two memberships today and connected with maybe another fifteen potential clients. It wasn’t the greatest day for us, but we figured that even the best salesmen have some slow days here and there. We started packing everything up around 230 and I headed home for the weekend as I had tomorrow off.

With David being out of the office for a family vacation, he requested that Kellan and I supply drinks to the Sebo Center for a faculty and staff meeting. We took 100 waters and 100 assorted drinks over to the facility and headed off to the student union for another day of SOAR. With the weather being nice, we set-up the tent and sold memberships outside. We found a few footballs and Frisbees and through those around to entice students to come over and see what all the fuss was all about. By the end of the day, we had connected with an additional 40 students from yesterday and sold memberships to another 6 students. We packed everything up around 3:00 p.m. and I headed back to the office to collect the leftover drinks from the meeting before heading home for the day.
Today was a big day at BGSU as some of the incoming freshmen were on campus for the first day of orientation. We spent the entire time outside the Bowen-Thompson Student Union selling Falcon Fanatics memberships to these students. Theby brought us two boxes of 500 business cards to distribute to potential clients and told us to entice the students by explaining that the club has a raffle ongoing for two free tickets to travel with the football team to the game against Ohio State. We used this tactic to explain to students that one of the few ways to guarantee them a ticket to the game was to win the raffle though the club. All in all, we sold four memberships and connected with another 25 potential clients during the three short hours we worked. We considered this a success as the club gained new members today.
Today at the office, David had us continue cleaning out the storage closet to ensure that there was enough space to store the new promotional gear in. We then headed back to the Intern Office and started sorting through the drawers, cleaning out all the junk and outdated paperwork that no longer pertains to the schools promotions. David requested that I go through the office computer and back-up all the files on his account so the computer could be cleaned up later in the week by ITS. Theby then sent Kellan and I off to drive around campus to start updating the restaurant list for potential schedule distribution.
Today, David requested the Kellan and I gather up drinks and a tent to be used for Freshman Orientation. We packed up the truck and moved everything over to the Bowen-Thompson Student Union and placed the items into storage at the facility. We headed back to the office where David began talking to us about the ongoing Baylor University Football Investigation. We had a long talk and he began to explain to us the cultural differences between a Public and Private University. He explained that at BGSU, they have a non-tolerance for any violence or sexually related crimes and any violation of this policy results in immediate and indefinite suspension from the team. He also explained that BGSU mandates all teams to attend a Title IX training during the season and they bring in speakers talking about what you should do if you ever see an assault happening.
When I arrived this morning to the office, David requested that I help him clean out the storage closet. We went down to the end of the hallway and began throwing away old, broken promotional items and found the Falcon Fanatics T-Shirts we needed for next week. We took those shirts down to the Intern Office and started separating them by size. I then pulled 100 shirts out of the boxes (20 smalls, 40 mediums, 20 larges, and 20 extra-larges) to be sold to incoming student at Freshman Orientation this month. Before I left for the day, I brought back the table, chairs, and leftover promotional items from the Baseball Stadium as the season has officially concluded.
Today, Kellan and I revised the entire 2016 Internship contract and implemented the Screech Team contract into the Internship Contract. This was a lengthy task as we took the documents from 16 pages down to 9 pages of useful information. We also made some revisions to both the Game-Day Operation Checklist and the Advertising Checklists. I sent all three documents back to David for re-approval. After lunch, I did a second revision on the Volleyball and Men’s Basketball Marketing Plans and brainstormed ideas on how to improve community outreach for the two teams.
Today I worked on creating a list of local businesses to potentially request to have them post team schedules inside. This list consisted of restaurants, hotels, fast food chains, and family owned businesses. Following this, I headed off to lunch with David and we discussed the current issues in sports and how a public university has different by-laws to follow then a private university. This conversation lasted well over an hour and taught me a lot about Title IX Compliance and how to abide by NCAA by-laws.
Today I continued working on the Men’s Basketball Marketing Plan and sent the document off to David for review. Kellan and I then began revising the Screech Team and BGSU Internship Contract for the 2016-2017 school year. We discussed ideas such as how to shorten the 16 page documents and what was important, what was repetitive, and what was useless. After brainstorming for nearly an hour, and spending another hour highlighting overlaps, we determined that creating one document was the best option. We started figuring out how to re-work the document so it was easy to read and still made a point to treat this as a professional workplace.
Today I continued working on gathering contact information for local school/churches and sent the updated document off to David to send to coaches and the ticketing office. We also discussed the budget constraints BGSU has when it comes to spending money on promotional items. BGSU has an overall budget of $38,000 to spend for all sports. These funds are allocated based upon season, sport, and previous attendance results from prior years. Football receives the most money to have spent on promotional items, however, they only receive $8,000 to use across the entire season to attempt to sellout the stadium at every home game. It became very clear to me just how difficult Theby's job was, given the small budget he has to work with. After our discussion ended, I started working on the Men’s Basketball Marketing Plan and researching new promotional ideas for basketball games.
Today I continued researching contact information for surrounding towns and cities within a 30 minute radius from Bowling Green. Around noon, I took a short break from my project to help David and Kellan set-up for the Falcon Five Miler event. We helped the Track and Field coaches move water and snacks out to the track for the event as well as moving cones to mark the gate entrance. After a short lunch break, I helped Bryan Gerber move the T-Shirt Cannon back to the Football stadium to put it into storage for the summer. We discussed details on how Bryan got started in the sports industry and what I wanted to gain from my experience at BGSU. After talking with Bryan, I realized that I didn’t want to work in ticketing as they spend the vast majority of their time behind a desk. After we got back to the office, I reviewed the Screech Team and Intern Contracts and began brainstorming ideas to change for the upcoming school year.
Today, David showed me how to run Photoshop and asked that I create Parking vouchers for free parking at Football Games. Upon completing this task, I began creating an excel document for the surrounding area to be used for contacting specific entities about being a host organization for a game. This file included information pertaining to churches, youth leagues, and schools in the area. This then became my project for the week as we quickly realized just how many towns needed to be included into the document. I used Google Maps to assist my efforts in finding the correct locations of all these facilities.
David was out of the office for the majority of the day, so I was left in charge of the interns. I corrected the Volleyball Marketing Plan that David reviewed yesterday and helped another intern work on correcting the Men’s Soccer Plan. Together, we also made changes to the new Marketing and Advertising Checklists, creating two separate documents to alleviate any confusion on what was a marketing point of emphasis and what was an advertising duty. I then sent these new documents off to David to get his feedback and to make any final changes before we adopted them for the fall sports season.
At the office today, we spent much of the morning viewing the Press Conference introducing the newest Athletic Director at BGSU, Bob Moosbrugger. In the afternoon, I continued to update and revise the Volleyball Marketing Plan and implementing a potential Promotional Calendar for them as well. I sent both documents to David before I left for him to review them and add in any new information that he forgot to include in the initial documents. Today, we came into the office and started cleaning out all the junk that was left behind when the previous Assistant Director left. This included throwing away outdated promotional items, expired drinks, and broken materials that were thrown into the corner of the office. At around 10, the other summer interns arrived and we introduced ourselves, explained what we wanted to gain from this experience, and were all assigned a specific sport to focus on for creating our Marketing Plans. After the meeting, I finalized the Men’s Basketball Attendance numbers for all the home games for last year and set those off the David for review. I then started working on attendance numbers for Gymnastics and Women’s Basketball. I shared these figures with the other interns so they could update the specific teams documents to show the correct information. Finally, David gave me last year’s Promotions and Advertising Checklists to update and improve to correlate with every sport on campus.
